HOME SWIMMING POOL SAFETY TIPS SET GROUND RULES AND ENFORCE THEM. NO RUNNING ON THE POOL DECK NO HORSEPLAY NO DIVING KEEP ELECTRONICS AWAY FROM THE POOL Make sure kids (and adults) using your pool are aware of the rules. Restrict pool access for those that break them. SECURE YOUR POOL WITH A FENCE. Install a tall, sturdy fence with a self-locking gate around the pool deck to keep out unwanted guests. A door alarm will provide an extra bit of security. ALWAYS BE PRESENT. Make sure to be there when guests are in the pool to observe that they use it properly. In the end-as the homeowner-you are responsible for the safety of guests to your home. KEEP KIDS CLOSE. Drowning happens fast. Never let your kids get far, or allow children under 5 to stray from arm's reach. Accidents due to neglect occur quickly, and constant supervision prevents them. TEACH KIDS HOW TO SWIM. Ensuring your kids are strong swimmers can lighten your responsibility and worry over keeping them safe. Enroll them in park district swimming lessons, or instruct them yourself if you have the time and ability. LIMIT INFLATABLE USE. Inflatables in the pool can be a lot of fun and allow you to lazily bask in the summer sun, but too many can obstruct your view of children in the pool. Always put them away after use, as young children may reach for them and accidentally fall in the water. ALARMS.ORG
