Why You Should Become a Board Member

There are many reasons why you should become a board member. The board is a vital part to the success of each and every community. With the help of the board, the association helps manage the community’s property areas, provide services for residents, establish and enforce community rules, regulations and policies, as well as many other important tasks. By becoming a board member, you can help give back to your community in many ways.

According to the Community Associations Institute (CAI), all community associations have three basic, defining characteristics:

?Membership in the community association is mandatory and automatic for all owners.
  1. Certain documents bind all owners to be governed by the community association.
  2. Mandatory lien-based economic charges or assessments are levied on each owner in order to operate and maintain the community association.

However, there is another:

4. Each community association has a board comprised of community members, who act in the best interest of the community by performing various duties.

As a Board member, you can help appoint committees, take part in constructing new community rules and regulations, and help decide on a community budget. You have the ability to help increase your home value as well as the safety and security of the community as a whole.

For more information on living in a community association, feel free to visit CAI’s website. There you will find information regarding governing documents for your community, community rules, regulations and fees, rights and responsibilities of homeowners in a community, and more.
