Video doorbells, like Ring and many others, are very common and a great way to find out who might have visited your home or dropped off or picked up packages at your doorway.
However, video doorbells typically have such a wide breadth that they record activity unrelated to your home. Neighbors of owners with video doorbells have complained that it is an invasion of privacy and should not be allowed.
A few years ago, our advice would have been to talk with your attorney about the rules around this and if there is a strong preference to allow it; that boards should consider changing the documents to allow these kinds of devices.
Although there are no clear laws on this, check out this article from Eric Glazer which explains a case that went to arbitration. In that case, the owners were required to remove their video doorbells, as they were judged to be a “material alteration.”
If you have video doorbells in your condo, you may want to discuss the situation with your attorney.
